Placement guide
Choose a printed sign for its placement.
A sign is a message attached to a place. Viewing distance, background, light, weather and mounting can matter as much as the artwork.
Work from the site outward
Answer these five placement questions.
- How far away? Estimate the first and closest reading distance. A driver, walker and visitor at a counter need different type sizes.
- What is behind it? Contrast can disappear against foliage, a dark façade, moving traffic or a bright waterfront.
- What light and weather? Note direct sun, shade, rain, wind and whether the sign is temporary or recurring.
- How is it mounted? Clarify the surface, hardware, edge clearance, installation responsibility and removal plan.
- What permission? Confirm property, landlord, event, municipal or venue approval before production.
| Placement moment | Message job | Proof test |
|---|---|---|
| Approach or driveway | Direction or identification | Read it at the turn, not only beside it |
| Window or entrance | Reason to enter | Check glare and reflection at the actual time |
| Job site | Expectation or contact | Keep the message short and permission-based |
| Event area | Wayfinding or schedule cue | Test from the queue and the moving path |
Scope note: Material names, weather ratings, hardware, installation, permitting, delivery and prices are project-specific. This guide does not promise any one sign system.
Next step
Describe the place before choosing the material.
Send a photo or written description of the placement, the viewing distance, dimensions, quantity and deadline. Include who controls the property and whether mounting help is needed.
The site chooses the sign.
